    • SOCIAL SECURITY

      Federal law provides that if you are married to your ex-spouse for at least ten years before your divorce becomes final that you are entitled to Social Security benefits based upon his or her earnings.

      Federal law requires each state to establish a child and spousal support program. The Department of Child Support Services provides its services free of charge and will:
      * Establish parentage;
      * Find the other parent for purpose of establishing and enforcing child support orders;
      * Establish child and/or medical support orders.
      * Enforce child and/or medical support orders.
      * Modify existing court orders for child and/or medical support.
      * Collect and disburse support payments.

    • INCOME TAXES

      The Internal Revenue Service has a very useful website in answering questions. Also, nearly every IRS form and publication is available online.

      IRS Publication 504 - If you have questions about the income tax treatment of alimony, child support, property transfers between spouses and claiming your children as dependents on your Federal and State income taxes.

      IRS Publication 503 - If you have questions as to whether you are eligible to use the credit for child care expenses on your Federal and State income taxes.

    • PROPERTY TAXES

      California law allows any person who is at least 55 years of age at the time of sale of the original/former property to transfer the base year value of the original property to a replacement dwelling of equal or lesser value within the same county.
